What materials are best for exterior building products?
It depends on the exposure, the color program, and the budget. Monolithic rigid PVC delivers structure, weatherability, and cost efficiency in one material, and it remains the workhorse for siding, fence, and window profiles in lighter colors. When a product line calls for deep colors, low-gloss woodgrains, or premium fade warranties, an AuroraShield™ ASA or AES cap layer co-extruded over a rigid PVC substrate concentrates the UV performance exactly where sunlight strikes. Most of our customers run both approaches across their product lines, and our engineers can help you decide where each one earns its keep.
What is capstock and why is it used?
Capstock is a thin weatherable cap layer, typically AuroraShield™ ASA or AES, bonded to a rigid substrate during co-extrusion. The two materials fuse in the die and exit as a single profile, so there is no secondary operation and no bond line to fail in the field. The cap layer carries the color, gloss control, and UV protection, while the substrate underneath provides the structure at a much lower cost than running a premium weatherable material through the full wall thickness. The result is through-the-line color performance at a fraction of the cost of a monolithic premium profile.
How do Aurora’s compounds achieve 25+ year exterior performance?
Long-term weatherability is engineered into the formulation, not added at the end. We balance UV stabilizer packages and titanium dioxide loading against impact modifier selection, so a compound holds both its color and its toughness as it ages, and we manage heat build-up so dark profiles stay flat in full summer sun. Every exterior formulation is validated through accelerated Xenon Arc and QUV weathering in our laboratory, correlated with real outdoor exposure programs, because a compound that only performs in the chamber is not one we will put our name on.
Can compounds be matched to dark exterior colors?
Yes, and this is one of the areas where formulation expertise matters most. Dark colors absorb more solar energy, and an ordinary dark profile can reach distortion temperatures on a south-facing wall. Our color lab uses IR-reflective pigment technology that keeps deep blues, greens, and near-blacks measurably cooler in full sun, paired with heat build-up engineering in the base compound. That combination is what lets today’s dark siding and trim programs carry real warranties instead of asterisks.
Do you offer sustainable options for building products?
es, in several forms. Our AuroraEcoplast™ line incorporates recycled content where performance allows, and rigid PVC itself is inherently recyclable, with in-plant and post-industrial material routinely reprocessed into new profiles. Just as importantly, a building product that performs for decades without replacement is a sustainability story in its own right, and that service life is exactly what our exterior formulations are engineered to deliver.
