What are flexible engineered thermoplastics?

Flexible engineered thermoplastics are custom-compounded polymer materials that combine rubber-like flexibility and elastomeric properties with the processing advantages of thermoplastics. Unlike thermoset rubber, which requires slow curing and cannot be recycled, flexible thermoplastics can be injection molded, extruded, blow molded, and overmolded using standard thermoplastic equipment, and most formulations are recyclable. What is the difference between TPE, TPR, and flexible PVC?

TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is a broad category of materials combining thermoplastic and elastomeric properties with excellent resilience and recovery. TPR (thermoplastic rubber) specifically refers to styrenic block copolymer compounds that mimic vulcanized rubber properties. Flexible PVC uses plasticizers to achieve flexibility and is typically the most cost-effective option. TPE/TPR offer advantages in recyclability, processing speed, and plasticizer-free formulations, while flexible PVC excels in cost efficiency and wide durometer range (35A to 95A Shore A).

What are SBS and SEBS compounds used for?

SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) and SEBS (styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene) are styrenic block copolymer compounds used in footwear products, gaskets, medical applications, toys, automotive glass reveals and trim, soft-touch overmolding, and general-purpose molded goods. SEBS offers superior UV resistance and thermal stability compared to SBS. Aurora offers these compounds from 10A to 50D durometer hardness with clear, oil-free, and color-matched grades. Most formulations are 100% recyclable and RoHS compliant.

What are low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) compounds?

LSZH compounds are flexible materials that eliminate halogenated flame retardants, significantly reducing toxic smoke and corrosive gas emissions during fire events. They are required in transit and rail applications, data centers, telecommunications infrastructure, and enclosed public spaces where smoke toxicity is a safety concern. Aurora’s LSZH compounds maintain the mechanical performance and processability needed for wire and cable jacketing and insulation while meeting stringent fire safety codes

How do flame retardant concentrates work?

Flame retardant concentrates (masterbatches) contain elevated loading levels of FR additives (up to 85% active content) dispersed in a polymer carrier. By adding a small percentage of concentrate to your base resin during processing, you achieve uniform FR distribution throughout the compound. Aurora’s concentrates can achieve UL 94 flame ratings with as little as 9% addition into base resins, and can combine FR with UV, expandable, odor masking, and desiccant additives in a single multifunctional masterbatch.

What are CPE alloys and where are they used?

CPE (chlorinated polyethylene) alloys are flexible compounds that provide an economical combination of oil resistance, chemical resistance, flame retardancy, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and dimensional stability. They are used in industrial hose and tubing, wire and cable jacketing, automotive components, chemical-resistant seals, and applications where oil/solvent exposure is a concern. CPE alloys offer a cost-effective alternative when rubber-like chemical resistance is needed without the expense of specialty elastomers.

What durometer range is available in your flexible compounds?

Aurora offers one of the broadest durometer ranges in the industry. TPE and TPR options are available from 10A (ultra-soft) to 50D (semi-rigid) Shore A/D hardness. Flexible PVC compounds range from 35A to 95A Shore A durometer with specific gravities from 1.15 to 1.65. Custom durometer targeting is available across all flexible compound families, and our formulation team can develop compounds with the exact hardness your application requires.
